Kanaka Bar Garden Tour

  • Kanaka Bar Kanaka Bar, BC, V0K 1Z0 Canada (map)

For our first garden tour of summer 2024, we appreciate being able to invite you to visit the  Kanaka Bar Indian Band's Food Self-Sufficiency Project.

The Project

Kanaka Bar has a vision to manage and use its land and resources to maintain a self-sufficient, sustainable, and vibrant community. Our Food Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Department has been working towards a goal of 100% of community resident food needs being met through local agriculture, community gardens, household gardens and traditional food sources. The FSS department is made up of a dedicated group of staff and community members who work in the gardens, orchard, food forests and harvesting areas, care for our livestock and coordinate food education and mentorship programs and events.

The Tour

According to Emma Bryce, project lead, the tour will take approximately 2 hours (or more depending on how many questions we ask!) and will include a 20 minute introduction to their Seed Library and Seed Saving by Mojave Kaplan. Mojave is one of the best known seed savers in BC and well known to many seed savers in the Lillooet area.

When: Leaving from the REC Centre Parking Lot by the library at 9:45 am on Monday, 29 July 2024, returning about 3 pm. Anticipated tour start time on site is about 11 am.

What to Bring: Bring a bag lunch and water. Coffee, tea and cold juice will be provided. AND - fresh salad from their gardens will be served on plates from their kitchen!

Getting There: Transportation is still being worked out. We hope to have a bus, but it depends on how many people pre-register for the trip. We ask anyone interested in joining us to pre-register by July 22nd. (250-256-8225 or lillooetfoodmatters@gmail.com).

Cost: The event, including transportation, is free, with costs covered by Lillooet Food Matters and Lillooet Agriculture & Food Society.

Questions?: Please contact Eleanor Wright at lillooetfoodmatters@gmail.com.
